The Icarus Hunt A Novel Timothy Zahn 9780553573916 Books

I started this book after reading a book so well written, that it spoiled other books. I thought jumping into something I would not normally read would give me a break. I had a hard start but once I got going liked the characters and their interplay. Descriptions of the ship a little foriegn to me but after awhile got the hand of it and looked forward to the reading. It kept me guessing who the bad guy was but could only have been one of three in my opinion. SO NOW WANT TO SEE IT AS A MOVIE, BUT DON'T LET THEM CHANGE ANYTHING!!!
I will read other books he has written.

The Icarus Hunt A Novel Timothy Zahn 9780553573916 Books Reviews

The Icarus Hunt is a stand alone science fiction novel by Timothy Zahn. It has elements of interstellar intrigue, murder mystery, quick thinking, and strategic posturing. This, like pretty much every other book I have read by Zahn is a real page turner with enough elements to keep you guessing to the very end. I would recommend this book to any one interested in any of the categories of books listed above.

For those more interested in philosophical questions and moral delemmas I would point them to Timothy Zahn's other stand alone book Soulminder. Happy reading.
One main impression I got while reading was that the milieu seemed to be designed to be adapted for film the aliens are basically what you would see in science fiction movies, the furniture and tech feel familiar and even deliberately old-fashioned. Maybe it is just the author's experience with media tie-ins like his Star wars novels.

Anyway, within this media friendly scifi universe he has constructed a fun light read which combines a number of mysteries. One of those even has a Poirotian resolution where the hero gathers the characters together to hear his deductions.
The Icarus Hunt (Mass Market Paperback) by Timothy Zahn

Hmmm... What a fun read! It's a SciFi, murder mystery, whodunit, political thriller. With lots of characters who make for an entertaining read. Our erstwhile heroes are some rather clumsy smugglers, who stumble into a trading mission that upsets the balance of economic and geographic powers that be.
Toss in some truly bad baddies, and some very twisted plot lines, and scratch you head trying to figure it all out. Oh, and an ending that was unexpected and very satisfying. Pick this one up and enjoy the trip!
My first Timothy Zahn book and I'd heard good things about him prior to reading it. Only took two chapters to get me hooked into it. I had ideas about where the story was going while I was reading it, but the book is written in such a way that I didn't mind having an inkling of what was to come. However, it's not at all predictable in every way - I was definitely surprised at least twice and in places where the reader is really meant to be surprised. The characters are represented well and the story is interesting. I'm encouraged to read another book by this author, although this specific book doesn't have a sequel (despite the ending hinting at one). It was definitely a good book to start Zahn-dom! 8)
"The MacGuffin Hunt", I mean "The Icarus Hunt" is a not-so-ambitious, lightweight, easily forgettable sci-fi adventure story. Our hero is a Han Solo swashbucklinkg type, good-natured and resourceful but with some secrets he keeps close to his chest. The book moves fairly quickly, and it's an easy read, probably appropriate for 12-year old and above. There are plenty of plot twists, and the hero/narrator has a sense of humor which keeps it light. Overall enjoyable, and doesn't take too much brainpower to figure it out. As for myself I guessed early on who the mysterious antagonist was based on the same clue that tips off our hero. But there were other parts that I should have guessed, but didn't.

On the negative side, character development is thin outside of a couple of the main characters. There are a couple of red herrings concerning the rest of the crew and their possible motivations with respect to the main mystery facing our hero, and these go unresolved. The plotting gets repetitive - fly to a planet, run some errands, get in trouble, make narrow escape, repeat. The hero/narrator also has a habit of recapitulating the plot points periodically, I suppose to remind the reader lest they forget what the mystery is and who the suspects are, and what the evidence is for/against each one. It is clearly aimed at a very broad, general audience including younger readers, definitely not high-brow writing.
I gave up a few chapters in. It just doesn't feel like a Timothy Zahn novel. I've wondered if it was a ghost writer. Seems like a good premise, I'm just used to higher quality writing. My 6th grader might love it if I can get her to try it. I have loved most all of his other Star Wars books. Outbound flight is my favorite. The new Thrawn was not among my favorites as it got too political for me. Don't give up on this author. Read Outbound Flight, The Thrawn Trilogy, and the two book Hand of Thrawn series.
I especially enjoy stand alone novels that resolve all questions before the final curtain. This work meets that description. This story should be classified as a SciFi mystery. The characters are well developed. The plot keeps you glued to the page. And, the answers to all questions elude a reader until the last few pages. I read a great deal of space opera works. I can't remember when I enjoyed one,as much as I did "The Icarus Hunt".
